One of the most positive teachers at the annex, Mrs. Straub agreed to be interviewed and reveal details in her life that lead to her becoming a teacher.
How long have you been teaching at SCHS?
This is my eighth year.
What made you choose to teach art?
I wanted to do art first by accident. I really enjoyed ceramics and majored in that and teaching was supposed to be a side a thing, but I ended up liking teaching better. Before I was involved with any side teaching assignments I never thought of becoming a teacher.
What has been the most rewarding part of being an art teacher?
Being able to be around creative students and see students who didn’t know they can express themselves in art and have it click has been very rewarding.
What has been some of the struggles of teaching?
You have to lay down your pride and not take things personally. It is especially difficult for me to not take things personally. It is easy to get your feelings hurt by other students since they can be mean, rude , and disrespectful. Some of the students can hold a grudge against you for no reason.
How do you balance teaching and your personal work?
I leave all my teaching stuff at school, so I don’t have to do anything at home. If I have extra work I stay in later to finish.
